Equinox Parties!

My family has attended and co-hosted equinox and seasonal parties as long as I can remember.
This year we are hosting a first day of Fall party! This is a very small party only three families are coming. We are going to roast marshmallows, eat vegetarian chili And do some fun Fall crafts.
I have put together a tutorial to help you host a great seasonal party.

The first thing to do is choose the date there are six main days that I have seen used.
There is June(changes every year) summer solstice the longest day of next year,
December (changes every year) winter solstice the shortest day of this year,
March 20th the first day of spring,
June 21st the first day of summer,
September 22nd the first day of fall,
December 21st the first day of winter(also happens to be the winter solstice this year)

For example's sake lets say you choose Sept. 22nd. Now you need to plan the food.
Here are some general guidelines for choosing the food.

Spring/summer parties: Cold foods like gazpacho*, salads, sandwiches, wraps, fruit, fresh veggies, smoothies, yogurts, tuna/chicken salad and dips.

Fall/winter parties: Hot foods like soups/stews, chili, fruit salad*, pigs in a blanket*, sautéed veggies, oat meal Etc.

*I hope to have a recipe up at a later date

Now that you have your menu its time to make invitations! So go get out your cute paper and stickers and get to work. you could send an email... but what fun is that?

Example:

You are invited!

What: A first day of Fall party
Where: My house
When: Saturday september 22nd from 6:00 to 10:00
Details: Come and gather 'round the camp fire and enjoy the first blasts of cool air.

Go send the babies off!

* most people say "please" first but that makes it sound like a request. You really do need a head count.

Now go through your seasonal or waldorf craft books and choose some great involved crafts for the kids and adults

Next, get organized. Write down your menu items, read through the recipes and make a list of the items you need to buy. Do the same for your crafts. Now check your emails of P.O. box and make your guest list.

Last decorate and have fun!

Tutorial: Crochet Scarecrow

Here Is the post I promised yesterday:

To make this scarecrow you will need:
There are two links because the pattern was not published on her blog.
Cute Hu?

I substituted the safety eyes with a sphere button.

I did not sew all the way around so the patch became a pocket!

I left his hair long in the back. Tip: instead of making a knotted mess on the back of his head
Stuff the knots in the staring hole. kind of like a wig.

I used less fringe on his hands and feet so his hands are visible

Make sure you check out the blog All About Ami she has great posts about her and her love for amigurumi! Also If you want to buy this very scarecrow that I made only for this post you can do so Here one time only chance so get it while you can.

New Etsy Post: Fall Scarecrow

I have decided to try to sell the things that I make on my blog as a one time only sale type thing. Like when movie producers sell of the movie props.
I just posted this little guy to Etsy
I will be doing a post more about him tomorrow!

Recourse Review: CraftyPod

Hi,
Todays recourse review is the CraftyPod Podcast with Sister Diane.
She started out a long time ago with cool product reviews, tutorials and interviews.
Her fist 100 or so Shows are great, free and fun.
They are still great but she advertises her self and other products. She does not have many tutorials any more. I have found that she kind of contradicts her self as she goes on.
I still love listening to her podcast I just have to ignore the commercial aspects.
Go try Her podcast in itunes under "CraftyPod"
Or get a premium subscription and get access to the show notes at:www.craftypod.com

Happy Listing!

Fold Paper Cranes

Origami is one of those really fun cheap crafts that is so calm and meditative. One of my favorite projects is the paper crane. I have made a step by step tutorial for you:

You will need
Origami paper
If you don't have origami paper you can learn how to make some Here
 Lay the paper face down
 Fold corner to corner
 Un-fold
Repeat
Now it should look like this:
 Next fold edge to edge
 Repeat
now it looks like this
Re-Fold corner to corner and hold like this
Push in the sides and crease
And here is a new angle
 there
 Now flip over and repeat
Fold on the sides with the layers on the bottom

 flip over and repeat
 fold down the point
 Un-fold
 and open the pocket
 don't worry keep going!
 Now carefully flatten it
 turn over
 and repeat
here is what it looks like from below

 Turn the page...
 like this
Repeat
 Now pull the corner....
Up.....
 Like this
 Repeat
 Now pull out the neck
 Crease
 Repeat for tail
Crown!
 Crease in the head...
 Like this
 Bend over the tail
Pull out the wings and fly!
Now go and cut tiny squares of paper to make tiny ones!

Have fun,
